Put It On My Charge

by Rhonda Rhea

“The first thing I want you to do is pray. Pray every way you know how, for everyone you know. Pray especially for rulers and their governments to rule well so we can be quietly about our business of living simply, in humble contemplation. This is the way our Savior God wants us to live,” 1 Timothy 2:1-3, MSG.

I have a terrible memory. So whenever it’s time to get a gift for someone, I have a hard time remembering what I’ve already given them. I bought one friend the same birthday card two years in a row. At least two years in a row. Talk about embarrassing. And keeping all the cards and gifts straight is getting trickier all the time.

That’s why I was pretty excited when I got an email today suggesting a gift that I’m oh so very sure I’ve never given anyone. It was an advertisement for a gift…defibrillator. Yeah, nothing says love like a thousand volts to the cardiac muscle. Besides, how fun would it be to get to call in an order for a defibrillator and then tell the person you’d like to “charge it”?

All myocardial infarctions aside, anytime our heart is a little sluggish spiritually, the perfect charge is just a prayer away. Romans 12:12 says to “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.” There’s real power in staying connected to him in prayer—the kind of power that’s generated from the Father himself. And it’s amazing how joyful hope and patient living are so tightly wrapped up in our faithfulness to pray. Prayer is totally life-changing—and life-charging.
As for the gift-giving thing, defibrillator this year. Then next Christmas how about a do-it-yourself IV kit for everyone? Who wouldn’t want to be able to start their own saline drip?
