Catch Up With Rhonda...

It’s usually women who are the multi-taskers, isn’t it? But get a load of my son, Jordan. Isn’t he playing the guitar and the piano at the same time?? I tip my multi-tasking hat (while simultaneously patting him on the back, doing that hip-hip-hooray thing with one fist in the air and whistling “For He’s the Jolly Good Fellow”—after all, I consider myself a multi-tasker, too).

Okay, so he’s not playing both at the exact same time. But he did switch back and forth from one instrument to the other—all in the same song and all while singing. I realize I’m his mom, but I have to tell you he was slick, seamless—ultra cool.

To make it a multi-faceted, multi-task blessing, every song Jordan’s band played honored and praised the name of Jesus. And just when you thought it couldn’t get more “multi,” it was a double-multi-task/multi-faceted blessing.

Check out my 13-year-old son, Daniel. He’s singing back-up and playing the bass—in a “multi-bless-yo-mamma” way.

Multi-tasking is a great concept, isn’t it? And how about spiritual multi-tasking? For instance, did you know we can grow and bear fruit AND help others grow at the same time? Multi-fruity! The Apostle Paul taught Timothy in chapter four of First Timothy to keep on growing in ministry. Then he said to “Cultivate these things. Immerse yourself in them. The people will all see you mature right before their eyes! … Both you and those who hear you will experience salvation” (verses 14-16, MSG).

Immersing ourselves in the things of Christ will cause us to bear fruit and to grow. And when others see our fruit and watch our growth, they’re encouraged to be fruitful and grow along, too. That’s enough to make us sing his praises and play on multi-instruments at the same time!

The Thessalonians were given an example. Paul said in 1 Thessalonians 1:6-8, “You became imitators of us and of the Lord. And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. The Lord’s message rang out from you not only in Macedonia and Achaia—your faith in God has become known everywhere.” Hey, multi-city multi-fruity!

I want to let the Lord’s message ring out—on whatever number of voices and instruments he gives me. How awesome to think that he can use our own spiritual growth to energize growth and inspire harmony in the lives of others. It’s slick, seamless and ultra-cool!

Hey, speaking of harmony, I’m wondering when Jordan is planning to learn to sing three parts himself while he plays piano and guitar. Think he could manage it all while drinking a glass of water?
