Writer's Secret
a devotional by Rhonda Rhea
"I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word. Teach me, O LORD, to follow your decrees; then I will keep them to the end. Give me understanding, and I will keep your law and obey it with all my heart. Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight."
Psalm 119: 16, 33-35
People who know I'm a writer ask me pretty regularly what it is that we humor writers do when we run out of funny stuff to say. And I do think it's got to be the humor writer's scariest place: you sit down at the computer…perfectly still for a half hour…until you finally shrug and go “Nope. I got nuttin'."
Okay, now I'm going to reveal one of the best kept secrets among writers. This, my friends, is what we do when we got nuttin'. Top secret stuff. Ready?
What do we do? We write about what happens we don't have anything funny to say. Then we usually make up a top ten list of some kind.
Now that I've clued you in to one of the most hush-hush writing ploys, let me just say that I really and truly don't worry all that much about running out of important things to say. Know why? Because I've got God’s Word. Always worthwhile, always important to life, always relevant. That's why we need to stay tuned in to his word all the time. Psalm 119: 16, 33-35 says, "I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word. Teach me, O LORD, to follow your decrees; then I will keep them to the end. Give me understanding, and I will keep your law and obey it with all my heart. Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight."
Now there's some delightfully worthwhile writing! Ever relevant, ever fruitful, ever vital.
As for my funny stuff? Okay, not as vital. But stay tuned anyway. There'll probably be a "top ten list" later.
