Lessons from My Vacation

by Rhonda Rhea

"Vacation." Just the word evokes feelings from almost everyone. Some immediately envision enjoying a tropical breeze, basking on a beach. For others - especially those with children - it can cause flashbacks of a toddler throwing up on the map, cross-country potty stops and shooting leers toward the back seat that could stop bullets. Me? I would have to go with a little of both.

Most of the time, I get to choose. Will I have a warm, fuzzy, beach-type moment, or will I end up banging my head repeatedly against the dashboard? It has a lot to do with my own attitude, my vacation expectations and my contentment level.

By the way, I'm writing this juicy little morsel while vacationing. At this moment, we're semi-fuzzy. But, as you might imagine, with five kids and two adults packed into a mini-van (along with enough luggage to clothe a third-world nation), the trip has not been without flashback-inducing moments.

At the last several restroom stops, I've pressed my face against my passenger side window and, just for fun, slowly mouthed the words, "Help me!" to anyone who would look. I think the authorities are looking for me in four states. Since I'm a Texas-grown gal, I'm happy to say that Texas is among them. They grow everything bigger in Texas, author excepted. Sadly, that does include the bugs. I'm scratching even now. I think there are more varieties of bugs in Texas than there are in the rain forest. They all...

Some Fancy Footwork

Cinderella’s fairy godmother certainly came up with some very creative ball-wear. But I have to question her wisdom with the glass shoe call. Fancy, yes, but what kind of fancy footwork would it take to make sure she didn’t crack a shoe?

What was that godmother thinking? One stumped toe and the night could’ve ended with a trip to the E.R. Sure, it would’ve been nice not to have to worry about all the messy shoe cleaners or polishes. A few squirts of Windex and they would be streak free and ready to party. But how care-free could a person be if she had to worry that if her feet started sweating, her prince would wonder why her shoes were fogging up?

Even without the sweat-fog, I’m wondering how the shoes could be anything even near comfortable. There’s just no give in a glass shoe. If I tried to walk in shoes that didn’t bend in any direction whatsoever, I can almost guarantee I would have more of a Frankenstein walk than a princess one.

Crack-a-Toe-a

Trying to dance with a Frankenstein gait would be problematic enough, but a girl would probably be annoyingly distracted through the entire dance worrying about serious shoe/foot danger. What if it turned out the prince wasn’t the best dancer in the kingdom? Puts a whole new spin on “break dancing,” doesn’t it? I can envision a different ending to that fairy tale with Cinderella limping back to her own little corner in her own little chair.

And I don’t mean to be critical—especially since the fairy godmother didn’t have a lot of raw materials to work with—but couldn’t she have done a better job sizing up the shoe situation? How badly does a pair of shoes have to fit for a princess-to-be to run right out of one? Maybe we should give her the benefit of the doubt and assume her wand needed a little recalibrating or something.

But from any and every direction, I’m thinking glass shoes were just not the wisest move.

We probably won’t ever be given the task of outfitting pre-royalty in magical party duds. But how can we grow in making the wisest moves in all the areas of our real life? Wise moves—all wisdom—is as completely wrapped up in our obedient surrender to Jesus as the carriage was wrapped up in the pumpkin. Practically the same.

Growing in this knowledge sounds so simple: wise, obedient surrender. You simply say the magic words, “I’m deciding to give you all, Lord” add a little fancy footwork of obedience, and, bippety-bobbety-boo, wisdom! And it really is an amazing thing when a person comes to a higher place of giving more of herself to the King. There is such blessing.
