Ya Better Believe It
by Rhonda Rhea
Infomercials work. At least they do on my family. My kids are the worst at getting sucked into the deal of the day. They love to come running to me with their sales pitches: “Mom, we have to get the Kitchen Magic Missile! It does the work of 37 kitchen and miscellaneous household tools.” I’m glad none of you can see my kitchen at this moment. It looks a little like someone already fired a kitchen missile. Direct hit. So my first question to the kids is usually something like, “Well will it clean my kitchen?” The second one is, “Will it at least make me look ten years younger?”
I have to admit, imagining 37 handy, dandy tools at work in the post-missile cleanup is tempting. It gets even better when I get to the TV just in time to discover that this Kitchen Missile slices, dices, juliennes, fold the laundry, and gets pretty good reception on most FM frequencies. “And that’s not all.” The Kitchen Magic Missile makes ice cream, balances your checkbook, and with is special attachment, gives your canine a professional grooming—all while it weeds your garden.
But Wait—There’s More!
Did I hear you can order the Kitchen Magic Missile and, for just the cost of shipping and handling, get the amazing Mushi knives, too? The knives are probably the most enticing. They can cut through the fender of a Buick and still slice a tomato to a thickness of less...

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” - John 8:12, NIV
Choco-survival
 |
For some of us, chocolate is not just a little treat. It’s a gotta-have-it kind of NEED. Some may think I’m exaggerating when I tell you it’s a matter of life and death, but with a little bit of math, I think I can shed some light on it.
Here’s how it works for me. My favorite hunk o’ chocolate has 150 calories. For me, chocolate is medicinal, so I take it in its personally prescribed dosage: “Take one chunk three times daily, increase prescribed amount as needed.” |
At three servings a day, we’re talking about just over 164,000 calories a year. Since 3500 calories is measured in about one pound of body weight, that’s about 47 pounds a year. I’ve been consistently taking my daily doses of chocolate for at least the past 15 years. Without my medicinal chocolate and its 47 added yearly pounds, I would be missing over 700 pounds of my present body weight. Since I weigh about 125, that means I would weigh NEGATIVE 575 pounds. Yes, I would’ve ceased to exist several times over!
It’s mathematical proof that I need my chocolate to survive
Seriously though, as “necessary” as chocolate is for my physical survival, I really and truly do need to depend on the power of the Living God if I want an existence that counts and a future of any value. I need his power like I need nothing else. It’s a need infinitely greater than any chocolate need I’ll ever experience.

In Ephesians 1:18-21, Paul prays that we’ll have a little holy light shed on what we have and what’s in store for our future. “I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light so that you can understand the wonderful future he has promised to those he called. I want you to realize what a rich and glorious inheritance he has given to his people. I pray that you will begin to understand the incredible greatness of his power for us who believe him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms. Now he is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else in this world or in the world to come” (NLT).
What a future! And it’s all held together by the power of God. How great is his power? His power raised Jesus from the dead! Is there any power we’ve ever seen or even heard about that can compare? No, none!
We do have a wonderful future promised to us if we’ve given our hearts and lives to Christ. It’s a better-than-chocolate-three-times-a-day future and a glorious life empowered by the God of all power.
As for my physical future, I guess I’d better make sure I keep getting my daily doses of chocolate. After all, I could be a mere 2.65957 years from extinction.
