Mercy Me
by Rhonda Rhea
I don’t have the spiritual gift of mercy. After a couple of minutes of comforting one of my children after a boo-boo, I’ve almost always had to fight off the strong urge to say something like, “Look, there’s no bone protruding through the skin. Unless this thing needs a tourniquet, it’s time to get over it and move on.”
While mercy is not among my spiritual gifts, one look at my husband will tell you he’s oozing with the stuff. When my kids were younger and got sick in the night, they would consistently take the long way around my side of the bed to get to his side. Then they would say something like, “Dad, I think I’m going to….” No need to explain how that scenario would end, right?
In the middle of one night as we were changing the sheets on our bed, Richie cracked a smile and said, “You can tell by the mattress who has the gift of mercy in this house.” He can be especially witty at 3 A.M. I answered, “Hey, I may not have the gift of mercy, but I don’t think I’ll be losing much sleep over it—over here on my nice, clean side of the bed.”
My natural tendency is to excuse any lack of compassion I may notice in myself because, “that’s just not my gift.” But I’ve also noticed God’s word gives me a different message about mercy...[read more]

Beefing Up
I know this sounds weird, but roast beef has always played a pretty big role in our family. It’s not that I actually cook it all that often.
After all, it doesn’t generally come pre-cooked, pre-packaged, pre-prepared, pre-garnished or “pre-” anything else this side of pre-digested. I like to cook the easy way…which usually means something like Kentucky Fried Chicken. Besides, with a family our size, the last time I made a roast I had to buy one so big I wondered if it was going to come with a saddle.
I was out trying to get a jump on my Christmas shopping the other day (with three college kids and two high-schoolers, you don’t even want to know how long it takes—or how much it costs). I rounded a corner in the store and stumped my toe on a big display rack. That’s when I realized that roast beef was more than just the other dark meat in our family. After all, I was in that “raising kids” mode for a lot of years. For some reason that means I don’t have toes anymore. I have piggies. I grabbed my foot and hissed, “Ah man, I annihilated the piggy that had none.” It was bad enough that particular little piggy got no roast beef, now he was going to be painfully purple for no telling how long, too.
Even now that the kids are older, there’s seldom a toe in this family that’s not identified by whether or not it ate roast beef.
Or maybe whether or not it |

went to the market—which is, incidentally, where we buy our roast beef. Or it may be identified as the piggy that went “wee, wee, wee” all the way home, but home is where we eat the beef. So you can see how beef-connected we are, right? So much beef in our lives.

Just in case it’s time to beef up your faith a little, this is just a small reminder that God owns and created all the cattle on all the hills. He made everything and he’s the one who holds it all together. He helps us keep it all together, too, so to speak. |
Through every good time and in the midst of every stubbed toe, “In him we live and move and have our being,” according to Acts 17:28.
The more we know about our all-powerful God, the more our faith grows and is reinforced. And faith in him helps us through this life…all the way home. |

Are you trying to get a jump on your Christmas shopping too? Guard your piggies and forget the roast beef. How about giving a gift with the gospel of Christ built right in? Talk about a gift that keeps on giving.
Full of scripture, I’m Dreaming of Some White Chocolate and High Heels in High Places might just be the gifts you’re looking for. If you’d like to check ‘em out, click the text links. |
