Writer's Secret
by Rhonda Rhea
"I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word. Teach me, O LORD, to follow your decrees; then I will keep them to the end. Give me understanding, and I will keep your law and obey it with all my heart. Direct me in the path of your commands, for there I find delight."
Psalm 119: 16, 33-35
People who know I'm a writer ask me pretty regularly what it is that we humor writers do when we run out of funny stuff to say. And I do think it's got to be the humor writer's scariest place: you sit down at the computer…perfectly still for a half hour…until you finally shrug and go “Nope. I got nuttin'."
Okay, now I'm going to reveal one of the best kept secrets among writers. This, my friends, is what we do when we got nuttin'. Top secret stuff. Ready?...[read more]

Bubble Butter
"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him,
so that you may overflow
with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Romans 15:13, NIV
Someone told me the other day that she thought I had a bubbly personality. Isn’t that sweet? I appreciated the thought, really I did. But then I couldn’t stop thinking of Alka-Seltzer. Bubbly. Now I know that stuff works for a lot of people, but no matter how hard I’ve tried, I have never been able to completely swallow stomach medicine that’s looks like it’s boiling. When my stomach is churning, why would I take a medicine that’s already churning on its own? Isn’t that double churning? And doesn’t that make butter? Believe me, not everything is better with Blue Bonnet on it.
If I’m going to bubble, I want to bubble with all the right kinds of bubbles. I was reading in Romans 15 where Paul talks about how God can fill us with joy and peace, and then we OVERFLOW with hope. Effervescing hope! Now that’s sweet.

I think I’ll shoot for having a bubbly hope. Anyway, that gal who told me I had a bubbly personality? I think she may have just been trying to butter me up.
